LINCOLN’S COFFIN FLAG

Recently Sold for $656,000

This remarkable flag holds major historical significance as the first flag to drape a U.S. President’s casket. Ordered by the War Department for Abraham Lincoln’s funeral and specially crafted from the finest wool by the Annin Flag Company, it meets the size requirements for an 1860s casket. The very rare 37-star flag was draped across Lincoln’s body during the 20-day train journey from Washington, D.C., to Springfield, Illinois, his final resting place. Originally presented to Senator Edwin Morgan, the flag dates back to 1965. After the long train ride Morgan gifted the flag to Dr. Lewis Applegate who passed it down as part of their legacy. In 1996, it was donated to the Museum of Southern History and is now being sold to raise funds for the construction of a new building, offering a rare opportunity to own a cherished piece of American history.
